Say That... Arnie under fire in Austrian home town over death penalty stance "The death penalty is law here, and I have to uphold the law of the land and the will of the people." That was what California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was quoted as saying after locals in his home town of Graz in Austria assailed him for his death penalty stance. The Governor came in for a barrage of criticism after his refusal to block the execution in California of Stanley Tookie Williams. 51-year old Williams was put to death by lethal injection in San Quentin State Prison on 13 December 2005 for the 1979 shotgun murders of a convenience store clerk and three motel owners - crimes he claims he was innocent of. The hundreds of mourners who attended the memorial service for Williams in Los Angeles on 20 December, included Rev. Jesse Jackson, rapper Snoop Dogg and Bianca Jagger. Williams was founder of the notorious Crips gang. While in prison he wrote nine children's books denouncing gang life and appealing to youth to change their ways. He was reportedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year from 2001 to 2005. His life was the subject of a movie 'Redemption' featuring Jamie Foxx as Williams. Williams was executed despite a high-profile campaign for clemency in which supporters claimed he had become a reformed character during more than 20 years on death row.
