The Odyssey, Book 1, lines 470-474. After Telemachus has been told by Athena that Odysseus is still alive, he decides to conceal this from the suitors. Instead he deceives them by announcing that his father is dead. To do otherwise would jeopardize the safety of the young prince and his mother. This is Telemachus showing his independence and taking matters into his own hands.
