Here let them lie
Till famine and the ague eat them up.
– William Shakespeare
Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5. Macbeth’s over-confidence and belief in his godlike invulnerabilty shows how detached from reality and self-deluded he has become. Facing overwhelming odds from Malcolm’s opposing army, Macbeth thinks that he and his castle are invincible to any kind of siege because of his belief in the Witches’ prophecies. Using a graphic metaphor, he defiantly curses the enemy forces to death from hunger and disease while they vainly try to lay siege to his castle.
