Mitch comes around the corner in work clothes: blue denim shirt and pants. He is unshaven.

– Tennessee Williams

A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 9. As Mitch calls to Blanche at the Kowalski home, his unshaven and informally dressed appearance emphasizes his working class status. It is in contrast to that of Blanche, who has on a scarlet satin robe. Mitch’s refusal to dress up and shave when seeing Blanche also reflects his discovery and upset that she is not the person he thought she was.
