STANLEY [thickly]: I want water.
MITCH: Put him under the shower!

– Tennessee Williams

A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 3. After the drunken Stanley beats Stella, Mitch orders that he be put in the shower to sober him up. We see here the motif of bathing used as a means of soul cleansing, with Stanley emerging from the shower with his temper cooled and feeling remorseful.
