Why should you think that I should woo in scorn?
Scorn and derision never come in tears.
Look when I vow, I weep; and vows so born,
In their nativity all truth appears.
How can these things in me seem scorn to you,
Bearing the badge of faith to prove them true?
– William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act 3, Scene 2. Lysander tries to convince Helena that he loves her. He strongly denies Helena’s claim that he is merely mocking her. His vows are so extravagent and exaggerated – "Look when I vow, I weep; and vows so born, In their nativity all truth appears" – that they don’t at all sound sincere.
