A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 4. Blanche tells Stella that the only way to live with an animal like Stanley is to keep him happy with sex. She finds Stanley’s brute force masculinity abhorrent and cannot understand her sister’s attraction to him, especially after he hit her the night before. Blanche is unknowingly foreshadowing her own rape, not realizing that Stanley will turn that animal force on her in Scene 10.
