You have no idea how stupid and horrid you’re being! Now close that trunk before she comes out of the bathroom!
[He kicks the trunk partly closed and sits on the kitchen table.]

– Tennessee Williams

A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 2. Normally the obedient wife, an angry Stella abandons her usual submissive female self to stand up to Stanley. Enraged and shocked at Stanley’s criticisms of Blanche and his rifling through her personal belongings, she lets fly at his stupid and ugly behavior. It is one of the first occasions for Stella to take her sister’s side over her husband. Stanley further shows his male aggression and dislike for Blanche by kicking her trunk in response.
