A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 1. On arrival to Stella Kowalski’s apartment and its working class setting in New Orleans, Blanche DuBois is shocked at how her sister has come down in the world. Blanche is dressed in elegant clothes and jewelry looking very much the Southern Belle. A simile compares her appearance to that of someone arriving to a summer party in the garden district. The white of her suit and gloves reflects an image of purity and chastity, but this will be later shown as ironic when her past sins and promiscuity are exposed. Her appearance is described as being out of place in this lower class community. In a metaphor she is compared her to a delicate and fragile moth that must avoid strong light. Moths tend to fly around artificial light sources, often dying as a result. When Blanche is later exposed to the strong light of reality, it leads to her demise as a character, which is foreshadowed here. Her description as "delicate" hints at her mental instability, which will see her committed to a mental institution.

There is much situational irony, symbolism and classical allusion in Blanche DuBois’s description of the journey she takes to get to Stella and Stanley’s apartment in New Orleans. Important themes of mortality and sexual desire are contained in her words to Eunice. Foreshadowed is her tragic journey to her eventual mental destruction and the fatal desire that drives her actions and those of the other characters. The streetcars Desire and Cemeteries referred to by Blanche are real and Elysian Fields is also an actual street. There is important metaphorical meaning in the three names used. In Greek mythology Elysian Fields was the final resting place for heroes and the virtuous, a heavenly reward from the gods after they died. But for Blanche it will bring no such comfort and will be the place of her emotional and mental downfall. Her trip on the streetcars symbolizes the journey of her own life to her degradation and ruin.

And turn that over-light off! Turn that off! I won’t be looked at in this merciless glare!

A Streetcar Named Desire, Scene 1. Blanche doesn’t want to be seen in the light and tells Stella to turn it off. She is trying to hide her age and dark past and doesn’t want her true self and appearance revealed. The light is personified here as a cruel and malign force glaring at her. Dark and light are important symbols in the play, one representing fantasy and the other reality, which Blanche is constantly trying to hide from.

But we know that she had already discovered a bottle of whiskey in the closet before Stella arrived and helped herself to a half tumbler. This is an example of dramatic irony. Blanche deludes herself into believing that she doesn’t have an alcohol problem. The reality is she covers up the extent of her drinking by lying about it to other people.

She compares it to something out of the imagination of horror writer Edgar Allan Poe. Blanche’s references to Poe in the play reflects her own descent into madness. Poe struggled with depression and his stories and poems were preoccupied with madness and death.

Just water, baby, to chase it! Now don’t get worried, your sister hasn’t turned into a drunkard, she’s just all shaken up and hot and tired and dirty!

When Stella returns home, Blanche has another glass. But she attempts to conceal her alcoholism from her sister by playing down her drinking. The audience already knows about Blanche’s over-fondness for drink, an example of dramatic irony.

Sometimes their breathing is hoarse, and sometimes it rattles, and sometimes they even cry out to you, "Don’t let me go!"

She feels the need to constantly physically clean herself. But she also wants to cleanse herself of past sins we later learn about – guilt over her husband’s suicide, a promiscuous past and affair with a teenage student while she was his teacher. Her compulsive bathing is akin to the mad Lady Macbeth’s attempts to wash Duncan’s imaginary blood off her hands after his murder: "Out, damned spot! out, I say!" The fact that Blanche must take a bath to quieten her nerves suggests a mental vulnerability that will ultimately lead to her madness.
