Dracula, Chapter 4. In his journal, Jonathan Harker writes about his imprisonment in Dracula’s castle and his beloved Mina, whom he is unsure he will ever see again. The "monsters" he refers to are Dracula and his three Brides, having learned that they are far from human. He wonders if his only escape is to jump off the high precipice and kill himself and trust the mercy of God.

Being proposed to is all very nice and all that sort of thing, but it isn’t at all a happy thing when you have to see a poor fellow, whom you know loves you honestly, going away and looking all broken hearted, and to know that, no matter what he may say at the moment, you are passing out of his life.

Dracula, Chapter 5. When Dr. John Seward and Quincey Morris declare their love to Lucy, she turns them down because of her strong feelings for Arthur Holmwood. But she feels sad because she loves the two suitors she rejected as friends.

I am very, very happy, and I don’t know what I have done to deserve it. I must only try in the future to show that I am not ungrateful to God for all His goodness to me in sending to me such a lover, such a husband, such a friend.

Dracula, Chapter 5. In her letter to Mina, Lucy is very explicit in describing her affections for Arthur Holmwood. Holmwood is one of three suitors who proposes marriage to her on the same day – along with Quincey Morris and Dr. John Seward. She chooses Holmwood as her fiancé.

I feel very solemn, but very, very happy. Jonathan woke a little after the hour, and all was ready, and he sat up in bed, propped up with pillows. He answered his "I will" firmly and strongly. I could hardly speak; my heart was so full that even those words seemed to choke me.

Dracula, Chapter 9. Mina and Jonathan are married by a chaplain. It is a bit solemn, she says, as he takes place at Jonathan’s bedside in Budapest, where he is recovering from his ordeal at Castle Dracula. Nevertheless she is very happy.

No man knows, till he experiences it, what it is to feel his own lifeblood drawn away into the veins of the woman he loves.

Dracula, Chapter 10. Dr. John Seward after he supplies his blood to Lucy Westenra for the second blood transfusion by Van Helsing. They do not tell Lucy’s fiancé Arthur Holmwood of the development. The transfusion works – "It was with a feeling of personal pride that I could see a faint tinge of colour steal back into the pallid cheeks and lips," as Seward puts it. Like with Dracula’s vampire acts, Lucy’s transfusions of blood from the men are seen as rather sexual.

Lucy’s eyes in form and colour; but Lucy’s eyes unclean and full of hell-fire, instead of the pure, gentle orbs we knew. At that moment the remnant of my love passed into hate and loathing.

Dracula, Chapter 16. Dr. John Seward writes this description of Lucy when she appears in her vampire form. No longer the paragon of virtue and innocence, Dracula has transformed her into one of his devils. At that moment Seward says the love he and his friends shared for her has turned into hate.

To one thing I have made up my mind; if we find out that Mina must be a vampire in the end, then she shall not go into that unknown and terrible land alone. I suppose it is thus that in old times one vampire meant many; just as their hideous bodies could only rest in sacred earth, so the holiest love was the recruiting sergeant for their ghastly ranks.

Dracula, Chapter 22. Jonathan Harker, after his wife Mina’s forehead burns when touched by the Holy Communion wafer. If she is fated to be a vampire, then he pledges to join her as one too, his devotion and love for her are so strong. He simply cannot see himself living without her.

My revenge is just begun! I spread it over centuries, and time is on my side. Your girls that you all love are mine already; and through them you and others shall yet be mine – my creatures, to do my bidding and to be my jackals when I want to feed.

Dracula, Chapter 23. Count Dracula boasts of his domination to Van Helsing’s group in the Picadilly house. He reveals how he will target the men through the women. As the women become vampires, they will feed off the men, and the Count will continue to feed off the women drinking their and indirectly the mens’ blood. He has begun his revenge, after the loss of the power and position his family once held while he was alive.

Even a sceptic, who can see nothing but a travesty of bitter truth in anything holy or emotional, would have been melted to the heart had he seen that little group of loving and devoted friends kneeling round that stricken and sorrowing lady; or heard the tender passion of her husband’s voice, as in tones so broken with emotion that often he had to pause.

Dracula, Chapter 25. Mina asks the men that they kill her when the time comes and she is transformed into a vampire. She also gets her veru emotional husband Jonathan to read her burial service to her while still alive, which he does in a broken voice. Dr. Seward describes the strong emotions this evokes in the group of loving friends.

We are truly in the hands of God. He alone knows what may be, and I pray Him, with all the strength of my sad and humble soul, that He will watch over my beloved husband; that whatever may happen, Jonathan may know that I loved him and honoured him more than I can say, and that my latest and truest thought will be always for him.

Dracula, Chapter 26. Even in the face of the devilish Dracula’s attacks on her, Mina maintains her Christian faith. She believes they are in God’s hands and prays that He will watch over and project her husband Jonathan.

We want no proofs; we ask none to believe us! This boy will some day know what a brave and gallant woman his mother is. Already he knows her sweetness and loving care; later on he will understand how some men so loved her, that they did dare much for her sake.

Dracula, Chapter 27. The final words of the novel, as Van Helsing pays tribute to Mina, while her son sits on his knee. He sums up her character perfectly – sweet, loving, brave and dedicated to the men who protected her.
