Death of a Salesman, Act 1. When Biff calls Willy a fraud he is alluding to the secret between him and his father. Biff was a student when he walked in on his father in a hotel room with another woman. The young Loman feels betrayed by the father he admired and trusted as a boy. Willy’s cheating marked the start of the conflict between father and son. But Biff decides not to tell his mother about his father’s deception, probably to protect her from the hurtful truth.
