Chanukah - The Festival of Lights |
and May This Festival of Lights bring
Blessings
upon you and All Your Loved Ones for Happiness,
for Health, and for Spiritual and Material Wealth,
and May the Lights of Chanukah Usher in the Light of Moshiach
and a Better World for All of Humankind.
Hanukkah blessing
It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
Chinese Proverb
Now, near the Winter Solstice, it is good to light candles.
All the nice meanings of bringing light to the world can be
beautiful. But perhaps we are concentrating on lighting the
world because we don't know how to light up our own lives.
Ralph Levy
Hanukkah - Another View.
Most Texans think Hanukkah is some sort of duck call.
Richard Lewis
They celebrated it for eight days with gladness like Sukkot
and recalled how a little while before, during Sukkot,
they had been wandering in the mountains and caverns like wild
animals.
So carrying lulavs ...they offered hymns of praise
to God who had brought to pass the purification of His own place.
II Maccabees 10. 6-7
In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians
called it "Christmas" and went to church; the Jews
called it "Hanukkah" and went to synagogue; the atheists
went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the
street would say "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy
Hanukkah!" or (to the atheists) "Look out for the
wall!"

Put on your yarmulke,
Here comes Hanukkah!
So much funukah,
To celebrate Hanukkah!
Hanukkah is the festival of lights.
Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights.
Adam Sandler
The Hanukkah Song
The major question, which we must ponder on Hanukkah, is whether
the Jewish people can develop an identity that will enable it
to meet the outside world without feeling threatened or intimidated.
The choice, hopefully, need not be ghettoization or assimilation.
We can absorb from others without being smothered. We can appreciate
and assimilate that which derives from "foreign" sources
and at the same time feel firmly anchored to our particular
frame of reference.
Rabbi David Hartman
A Different Light: The Hanukkah Book of
Celebration, edited by Noam Zion and Barbara Spectre.
Rock of Ages, let our song,
Praise Thy saving power
Thou amidst the raging foes,
Wast our sheltering tower
Furious they assailed us,
But Thine arm availed us
And thy word broke their sword,
When our own strength failed us.
And thy word broke their sword,
When our own strength failed us.
Rock of Ages (Hymn)
Who can retell the things that befell us, who can count them?
In every age a hero or sage came to our aid
Who can retell the things that befell us, who can count them?
In every age a hero or sage came to our aid.
Hear! In days of yore in Israel's ancient land
Maccabeus led the faithful band
Now all Israel must as one arise
Redeem itself through deed and sacrifice.
Who Can Retell (Song)
Chanukkah, Oh Chanukkah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather round the table, we'll have a treat
Shiny tops to play with, latkes to eat.
And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago.
Chanukkah, Oh Chanukkah (Song)
Dreidel, spin, spin, spin.
Hanukkah is a great holiday.
Hanukkah is a great holiday.
Dreidel, spin, spin, spin.
It is a celebration for our nation.
A great miracle happened there.
A great miracle happened there.
It is a celebration for our nation.
Sevivon, Sov, Sov, Sov (Song)
I have a little dreidel. I made it out of clay.
When it's dry and ready, with dreidel I shall play.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made you out of clay.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, with dreidel I shall play
My dreidel's always playful. It loves to dance and spin.
A happy game of dreidel, come play now let's begin.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, it loves to dance and spin.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel. Come play now let's begin.
Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel (Song)
Kindle the taper like the steadfast star
Ablaze on evening's forehead o'er the earth,
And add each night a lustre till afar
An eightfold splendor shine above thy hearth.

Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame
Blessed is the flame that burns in the secret fastness of the
heart.
Hannah Senesh
The miracle, of course, was not that the oil for the sacred
light -
in a little cruse - lasted as long as they say;
but that the courage of the Maccabees lasted to this day:
let that nourish my flickering spirit.
Charles Reznikoff
Meditations on the Fall and Winter Holidays.
We have focused on the miracle-thing and I think we often overlook
the message of Hanukkah. To me, the core of the holiday is the
cleaning of the temple.... The accomplishment was in restoring
the temple to the purpose for which it was built. Now think
of the temple as a symbol. Perhaps it represents my life. The
world has tried to use me for its own (perhaps good, but none-the-less
extrinsic) purposes. But now I can rededicate myself to my own
original purpose.
Ralph Levy
Hanukkah - Another View.
Let the straight flower bespeak its purpose in straightness
- to seek the light.
Let the crooked flower bespeak its purpose in crookedness -
to seek the light.
Let the crookedness and straightness bespeak the light.
Allen Ginsberg
Psalm III.
Christmas brings enormous electric bills. Candles are used for
Hanukkah. Not only are we spared enormous electric bills, but
we get to feel good about not contributing to the energy crisis.

By all means, then, let us have psalms

Come here, I will show you a new way to the Creator: Not through
speech, but through song! Let us sing and Heaven will understand
us.

Praised are You, Our God, Ruler of the universe, Who made us
holy through your commandments and commanded us to kindle the
Hanukah lights.

Still ours the dance, the feast, the glorious Psalm,
The mystic lights of emblem, and the Word.
