In the names of all the elves in Christendom, is that Jane Eyre?…what have you done with me, witch, sorceress? Who is in the room besides you? Have you plotted to drown me?
– Charlotte Bronte
Jane Eyre, Chapter 15. Mr. Rochester shouts this to Jane when he suddenly wakes up in a pool of water with his bed and curtains set on fire. He calls her a witch and sorceress, thinking she has done something diabolical. But Jane has just saved Rochester by pouring water on the bedroom blaze stared by his mad wife Bertha. The bed-burning incident foreshadows that Bertha will later burn down the entire house.
