Jane Eyre, Chapter 17. Rochester has been flirting with Blanche Ingram in a bid to make Jane jealous and make her believe that he is going to marry Blanche. So when Jane slips away from the party in the drawing room, Rochester catches up with her and speaks this passage to her. He demands that she spend time with him and his guests each evening. But when he notices tears in her eyes he excuses her for that evening.
