King Lear, Act 1, Scene 1. The King of France comments on Lear’s irrational behavior and on his former affection for Cordelia. He finds it strange that Cordelia, Lear’s "best object," should have done something so monstrous to lose that affection. France is being ironic here, for he can see clearly, if Lear cannot.
