Elegant Jewel-Encrusted Headbands

If you often wear headbands you're probably familiar with the wide, stretchy type that, when worn, goes all the way around the head. They're generally flat and made of cloth or even velour. These headbands are inexpensive, washable and, let's face it, ordinary. They don't have to be, though. You can easily change the simple headbands into magnificent works of art that others will truly admire. You don't have to be an artist to create them, so gather a few craft supplies, and get busy making your masterpiece!

It's easiest to lay the wide headband on a table and start working, but when you go to stretch it over your head upon completion, you'll find that the area where you've done the artwork is no longer stretchy. That can become a problem if you do quite a lot of work to the headband. You could, in the end, find that your creation will not fit over your head. To prevent this horror just stretch the headband around a coffee can or another round object. Lay the can on a piece of foam or fabric to keep it from rolling while you're working. If you want to make your headband even more beautiful, we can recommend solvent resistant glitter for nail polish.

Most of the stretchy headbands have a seam. Be sure the seam is placed in the back before starting the design. There are any number of things you can use to make the one-of-a-kind creation you have in mind. Even if you don't have a pattern in mind your headband will still turn out fabulous! Make an easy but elegant design by starting with fake jewels from a craft store.

Fake jewels come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. You can use many small jewels to create the look you want, or you can use one large jewel, surrounded by smaller ones. Position the design off to one side of the headband, or create a pattern that goes all the way across the top. Combine various colors of stones or choose one color and make your creation with just that color. Even if you choose only one color you can still mix and match sizes and shapes for different looks each time. The many options means no two will ever be the same.

Have the area of the headband you want to work on directly in front of you. Placing the coffee can on a towel or foam will keep it steady. Begin by using fabric glue - found at any craft store - to affix the jewels to the headband. Use a stencil to create the shapes and designs or just randomly attach the jewels.

You can make flower shapes, celestial patterns, geometric designs and more. The finished design is completely up to you. Get ideas from coloring books and actually use the coloring book images as patterns. It's helpful to use a disappearing ink marker to draw the designs. Find the markers at any store that sells fabrics and notions. The pens will allow you to draw the pattern onto the headband without having to worry about covering up every line and mark. The ink will generally disappear within 24 hours or less.

If you'd like to make a design that is larger than the width of the headband that's simple to accomplish. Simply make the design on a separate piece of cloth and use the fabric glue to attach it to the headband. One easy way to make this happen is to cut an image from cloth. The image can be a poodle, a lighthouse or anything you want. Glue the jewels onto the fabric piece, creating the pattern you want, then attach the separate piece to the stretchy headband.

There are many different craft supplies you can add to the jewels to create the final look. Pieces of ribbon, satin bows - even tiny silk flowers. Craft stores are full of miniatures that will help you create the ultimate headband masterpiece. You'll find the jewels in packs of many for under five bucks. Large stones will have less in the pack, of course, and you can also purchase packs that have assorted shapes and sizes.

You'll enjoy the beauty of your new headbands and you'll love the fact that no one else has headbands like yours! You'll be busy answering lots of questions about your new headbands, though, since they are certainly going to draw lots of attention!
