Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 45. This is the narrator’s comment on Caroline Bingley’s outburst of naked jealousy in which she ridicules Elizabeth’s looks and facial features. Caroline, who is interested in Mr. Darcy, is aware that he admires Elizabeth. However, her nasty attack on Elizabeth doesn’t seem the best way to win his admiration, as the narrator points out.
