O, give me thy hand,
One writ with me in sour misfortune’s book!
I’ll bury thee in a triumphant grave.
– William Shakespeare
Romeo and Juliet, Act 5, Scene 3. After slaying Paris, Romeo shows remarkable kindness towards his foe when he grants his dying wish to be buried in Juliet’s tomb. As he lays Paris’s body in the tomb, he views him much as a comrade in matters of love and death, saying they have both had their share of bad fortune. Misfortune is personified here.
