"A dear soul gonna join her Jesus," she said. Ma cried, "That ain’t so!"

– John Steinbeck

The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 18. A Jehovah’s Witness woman enters the tent where Granma is ill and wants to hold a Jehovite prayer meeting for her. But Ma Joad, who has her own faith and doesn’t like the holier-than-thou approach of the Jehovites, refuses. She tells her that Granma is tired and couldn’t stand a meeting. The woman reproachfully asks Ma, "Ain’t you believers?" To which Ma responds, "We always been Holiness."
