As Dawn rose up from bed by her lordly mate Tithonus,
bringing light to immortal gods and mortal men,
the gods sat down in council, circling Zeus
the thunder king whose power rules the world.
– Homer
The Odyssey, Book 5, lines 1-4. These opening lines of Book 5 provide a good example of personification of the dawn. The awakening of the new day is personified as the goddess Eos, who rises from bed beside her lover Tithonus to bring light to all.
