"Circe –
how could any man in his right mind endure
the taste of food and drink before he’d freed
his comrades-in-arms and looked them in the eyes?
If you, you really want me to eat and drink,
set them free, all my beloved comrades –
let me feast my eyes."
– Homer
The Odyssey, Book 10, lines 422-428. When Circe lays on a lavish feast of food and wine for Odysseus, he refuses to eat it. He demands that she first free his men, who have been turned into pigs by the sorceress. Odysseus shows commendable loyalty and good leadership here.
