While you here do snoring lie,
Open-eyed conspiracy
His time doth take.
If of life you keep a care,
Shake off slumber, and beware:
Awake, awake!
– William Shakespeare
The Tempest, Act 2, Scene 1. Ariel prevents the murder of Alonso, King of Naples, and his advisor Gonzalo by Antonio and Sebastian. Alonso and Gonzalo are sleeping, but Ariel (invisible) sings this verse in Gonzalo’s ear to awaken them and alert them to the would-be assassins who have their knives drawn.
